Wayne Wheeler, 83, of Ashland, passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.
He was born July 26, 1934, in Ashland, a son of the late Herman and Ruby McCallister Wheeler.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Roberta Broughton; and a brother, Bill Wheeler.
Wayne was a member of Second Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army during Korea and retired after 29 years of service as a proofreader from the Daily Independent. He was also secretary of the Typographical Union at the paper for many years.
He was an avid traveler and enjoyed many trips with his family, friends and the Ashland Roadrunners Club.
He is survivors a sister, Julia Vencill and husband Dan of Ashland; a brother, Arnold Wheeler of Waycross, Ga.; two nieces, Amy Baker and husband Eric of Ashland and Lori Hooks and husband Brad of Waycross, Ga.; a nephew, Tony Wheeler and wife Melissa of Waycross, Ga.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel with Pastor Mike Rice officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens with military rites provided by U.S. Army and Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
