Albert Lee Smith, 71, of Ashland, passed away Friday, March 2, 2018 at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital after a brief illness. Albert was born May 21, 1946, in Ashland, a son of the late Albert “Nick” Smith and Pearl Cripple Smith Neal. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brother Earnest Smith and three sisters Janelle Ross, Phyllis (Bobby) Hall, Barbara Copley and a daughter Angela Gayle Smith.
Albert was a very dedicated hard worker and provider for his family. He began his career as a young man in the field of auto mechanic, served his country honorably with the US Army during the Vietnam War and progressed his career as a skilled and talented Diesel Mechanic. He was a Deacon and member of the Westwood United Baptist Church. He enjoyed being with his friends in the BB’s Car Club and gardening. Albert was genuine, honest, caring, loyal, kind and friendly to all and had a positive outlook on life. He will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years Gayle Smith, son Dennis Smith of Flatwoods, daughters Melissa Smith of Columbia, SC, Serena Curnutte and husband Nathan of Flatwoods, KY, grandsons Benjamin Arrowood, Landon Curnutte, Jace Curnutte, sister Janet (Richard) Henderson of Greenup, brother-in-laws, Pete Ross of Ashland, Earl Copley of Argillite and a host of extended loving family members and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Monday, March 5, 2018 at the Westwood United Baptist Church on Hoods Creek Pike by elders Clarence Thompson, Jr, Ike Flaugher and Clayton Oliver. Burial with military honors will be in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5-8pm at the Steen Funeral Home 13th St. Chapel.
