Bernice Hester Hurtt Dobson, 89, of Ashland, died peacefully Thursday morning, surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her residence.

She was born January 16, 1931, in Ashland, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Drew and Madge Moore Hester. A large and close knit family, five brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death; Etley Hester, Henry Hester, Frank Hester, Ralph Hester, Bill Hester, Overta Faye Hester (infant sister), Carolyn “Sue” Frazier, and Betty Jean Huff.

Bernice was a member of Ashland First Church of the Nazarene. She was the former co-owner of Dick’s Auto Wash in Ashland and Huntington. Her entire life was spent in service to others. While her daughter was in school, Bernice served as Home Room Mother and Treasure of the PTA. In later years, she worked at the YMCA as an exercise instructor. She was an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed baking, cooking and being surrounded by her family and friends. Bernice had a distinctive way of making everyone she came in contact with to feel special and loved.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Donald Sheldon Dobson of Ashland; daughter, Debra Hurtt Caudill of Ashland; two stepchildren, Frances K. Hurtt Gay of Ashland and James R. Hurtt of Shelbyville, KY; two grandchildren, Samantha R. Caudill and James A. “Bo” Smith; five great grandchildren, Katie Smith, Lauren Smith, Brooklyn Smith, Gavin Eckard and Colin Eckard; two brothers, Drew Hester, Jr. of Russell and Franklin Del Hester (Billie) of Lewisville, TX; one sister, Linda Green (Bob) of Rush.; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

A private service will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel with. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bernice’s memory may be made to Community Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association.
