Betty Jean Smeltzer Qualls, 91, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at her residence.
She was born November 1, 1928, in Kenova, West Virginia, a daughter of the late James and Ruby McClure Smeltzer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, of 58 years, James Robert Qualls, Sr. in 2007; a grandson, Jarrod Levi Jones; and three brothers, Errol “Duck” Smeltzer, Jack Smeltzer, Clifford Smeltzer and three sisters, Gladys Childers, Margie Watts and Katherine Dickey.
Betty was a 1946 graduate of Ceredo Kenova High School where she played Roller Hockey for four years. She was baptized in the Baptist church in 1955 and worked for 46 years as a self-employed bookkeeper for Qualls and Sons Heating and Air conditioning. Betty enjoyed traveling, fishing and being surrounded by her family and friends.
Those left to cherish her memory include sons, James Robert Jr. (Penny) Qualls of Argillite, Ky., Gregory Alan Qualls and Michael Curtis (Charlene) Qualls, both of Ashland, and Timothy Brian (Linda) Qualls of Pedro, Ohio; daughters Carmen “Sis” Marie (Anthony) Hankins of Ashland, Ky., and Kimberly Jean (Billie) Jones of Kitts Hill, Ohio; seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A private graveside service will be held on Monday, May 4, 2020 at Highland Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Paul Badgett officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to your favorite charity.
