Billy Don Turner, 94, of Ashland Kentucky, passed away, Tuesday morning, May 23, 2023 surrounded by family and friends. Born in Bedford Indiana on July 10, 1928, he was the son of the late Fred and Bessie Denham Turner of Bedford Indiana.
Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Phyllis Tyler Turner, a brother and sister-in-law Jack & Lorry Turner, his son in law Rich Barber and in-laws Lisman & Marie Tyler
For many years, Bill and his wife Phyllis made their home in Russell KY. Bill was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Julian M. Carroll. He was active in the following organizations: Ashland Area Emmaus Community, Ashland Business Association, Salvation Army, Rotary Club of Ashland, Ashland Elks BPOE #350, American Legion Post #76, SCORE and the Toastmasters Club. He was a member of Cornerstone Methodist Church. He retired in 1988 after 38 years of employment with the JC Penny Company as Store Manager.
He was a member of the Scottish Rite (Supreme Council of Sovereign, Grand Inspectors General, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite), Masonic Lodge (Royal Order of the Jesters, Big Sandy Court #172 R.O.J., Thirty Third Degree of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction) and the Shriners (Zembo Temple, El Hasa Temple).
Bill was a United States Army Veteran serving in the Korean War from 1953 – 1954.
Bill is survived by his daughter Donna Barber who resides in Russell KY.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00am Friday at the Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel with words of comfort provided by Rev. Keith Katterheinrich.
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6-8 pm and Friday prior to services from 10:00am until service time.
Burial will follow services at the Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Military funeral honors will be provided by members of the American Legion Post #93, Kenova, WV and the United States Army.
