Tribute

Dan Imes, 57, of Flatwoods, KY, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 30, 2022.  He was a loving husband and father and is survived by wife Jill Isaac Imes of Flatwoods, his daughter Emma Grace Imes of Lexington, his brothers David Richard Imes and wife, Susannah of Ashland, Dwayne Edward Imes and wife, Kara of Lexington and a host of extended family and friends. Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Armond Russell “Buddy” Imes, Jr. and Bonnie Kemper Imes.

He was a proud 1982 graduate of Boyd County High School. Furthermore, he completed his B.A. in Music Education at Morehead State University in 1986 where he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Beta Mu and Kappa Delta Pi.  He then earned his Masters Degree in Education and Rank I from Western Kentucky University. Dan has been an educator for 36 years. Including 16 years as a band director in Kentucky and Ohio before going into school administration.  

Dan was the band director at Campbellsville High School for fourteen years where he led the band to five state championship finals. Dan adjudicated orchestras, marching and concert bands in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia. He worked as a marching band drill writer and clinician. He acted as the announcer for the Kentucky Music Educators Association Marching Band Championships, known as the voice of KMEA.  Dan was a member and has served on the board of directors for the Kentucky Association of School Administrators and the Kentucky Association of School Councils.  Dan was a former principal of Lebanon Middle School in Lebanon, KY, of Wurtland Middle School in Wurtland, KY and Boyd County High School in Ashland, KY. He taught music education courses at Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, KY and was currently working with music student teachers at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky.

Dan, who was a very close friend of Santa Claus, loved helping the jolly ol’ elf on visits to local children during Christmastime. He played 1st trumpet for the Portsmouth Wind Symphony and was a proud Kentucky Colonel.  

Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Thursday, August 4, 2022, at the STEEN FUNERAL HOME CENTRAL AVENUE CHAPEL by Pastor Frank Tate. Burial will follow services in the Ashland Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm at the funeral home and Thursday prior to services from 1-2pm.
