So many memories! Don and my cousin David Smith went to school together and then on to college with another family member- Jim Andy Caudill. I played 1st chair trombone and had Don as my band director at Paul Blazer. I graduated in 1975, but kept up with him through his sister, Carolyn, and her son, Tony. Don Payne was a kind and funny, music-loving man. It was an honor to have known him and share time with him. Rest high on that mountain, my friend! Your time here - well done!!!!

Mr. Payne was amazing, and his influence will last on through his family, many friends and students. He made me believe in myself, and I still use his lessons with my own children. Thank you Mr. Payne, for everything you did for me. I truly loved you like family, and will always continue to do so.

Don was a super music educator at Paul Blazer. A gentleman with personal maturity and patience of a saint. He gave 100% to educate us and helped change our music culture from an "athletic competition" to what it should have been, an appreciation of music for music's sake. Underappreciated at the time I'm sure by many of us, but in retrospect I appreciate my time under him more than any leader in high school AND college. Just never got a chance to tell him. Thanks, Don!

I hadn't known Don very long; 2-3 years? But he was a bundle of fun. I felt privileged when he gave me one of his CD's. As music librarian for the PWS, he would turn in his music to me in alphabetic order, nicely bundled up. He made sure he pointed that out to me, and I got a kick out of it, though I had to undo that to mix it in with the rest of everyone else's. I'm glad I got to know him as long as I did. He enriched my life. As the old joke goes; may he decompose in peace and joy.

Mr. Payne was a wonderful band director. I had him during my middle school and high school years. I could not have asked for a better person to teach me about music. I am so thankful for all that he did for me and the things that he taught me.

So sorry to hear of your loss, and will continue to keep Mr. Payne's family in my prayers. He was an amazing man, a brilliant musician, favorite teacher, mentor, friend, and father figure, to so many over the generations...including myself. He was truly loved, and will truly be missed, but never forgotten. πŸ’–πŸŽΊπŸŽΆπŸ’–

Don was a wonderful mentor, teacher, and all around wonderful human being. His "ripple" will be neverending, the young musicians he inspired (including me) pass his knowledge to new generations. Don and I connected when I was home on leave and because of him I accepted a collateral duty as a band "leader" for one of my duty stations. An inspiration, one of the true music makers we should all aspire to emulate.

Dear Sharon, and all my Family members
I am sorry for your loss. Although I have not seen Donnie in many years since the passing of his brother/my Father Richard(Dick), I will miss him dearly in my heart. The memories I have of him are that of a very kind, humorous, and talented person. My Father and Mother loved him very much. He was a blessing to many and I am so happy people came to this site to share the joys he brought to their lives , too. We all know that losing someone we love dearly makes life difficult in many ways, but I hope you will all stay close, strong, and help each other through. God Bless
