Doris McCalvin

Doris Geraldine Newkirk McCalvin, 87, a caring wife, mother, sister, and friend. She left this world to be with our heavenly father on January 18, 2022 at the River Crossing Nursing Facility in Rockford, Il.
She was youngest child born to the late Raymond and Mandie Newkirk of Ashland, Kentucky on July 27, 1934. She had 9 brothers and sisters. After graduating Ashland High School, class of 1952, she worked as an accountant for Armco Steel in Ashland, and retired in 1967 to be a full-time mother and homemaker.
She married her husband George Delbert McCalvin and were happily married for 67 years.
During their marriage, they had one son, Drexel McCalvin, 54, of Kingston, Illinois.
Doris loved art and painting, as well as spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family. She was a skilled organist and loved interacting time with her family and friends. She never met a stranger. During her later years she lost most of her eyesight but made up for it in a multitude of other ways. As her health declined, she moved to be with her son in Illinois.
She is survived by her husband George, their son Drexel, and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Thursday, January 27, 2022 at the Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel by Chaplain Jimm Smedley. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday evening from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
