Dorothy (Dottie) Ellington went to be with the Lord on Saturday January 14 after a brief illness. Dorothy Louise Porter was born February 24,1924 in Huntington, W.Va. but grew up in Ashland, KY attending Ashland High School (’42) and The University of Kentucky where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Formerly married to the late James Ellington of Ashland, she spent many years teaching elementary school in Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, retiring in 1989. Retirement saw her fulfilling a life-long dream of being a clown and “Fluffles” ministered in hospitals in Melbourne, Florida and Ashland. “Aunt Dottie” attended CornerStone Methodist Church in Ashland and played piano for many years in the children’s Sunday school as well as for weekly services at the King’s Daughters Home. The last five years found her at Morning Pointe Assisted Living Center where the caring staff not only made sure to have her “special” salad at lunch but also put a piano in her room during the pandemic so she could continue to “tickle the ivories”.
She is survived by her sons Glen (BJ) of Burnsville, NC and Jim (Meagan)of Midlothian, VA as well as grandchildren Hannah, Sarah and Terri and very special niece Cheryl Spears (Ed). It was Dottie’s special joy to have met her great-grandson Porter last year.
There will be a private family service later this week and they request in lieu of flowers that any donations be made to CornerStone Methodist Church in Ashland.
