Tribute

George Gary Scott was a devoted father and grandfather.  He passed away on March 4, 2023 at King’s Daughters Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Alma Sheryl Scott. Mr. Scott was born October 1, 1939 in Boyd County, Kentucky.  He is survived by his two loving daughters and their husbands, Kimberly Faye Scott McCann (Michael) of Ashland and Alison Raye Scott Bays (Marty) of Ashland.  He is also survived by his three granddaughters who he cherished deeply, Kayla Faye Scott McCann Marty (Jeffrey) of Davidson, North Carolina; Megan Raye Bays of Ashland; and Sara Marissa Bays of Ashland.
He devoted all of his time and attention to his family, his farm, and his forty years of service to AK Steel in the Maintenance Dept. at the Continuous Caster.  Mr. Scott was known by his daughters as “Dad” but his granddaughters and their friends called him “Pa”.  His grandchildren always knew Pa was strong and could fix anything which was broken.  He did this not only at his own farm, but also at the homes of his daughters.  He believed a person should never hire someone to do a job that he could do for himself.  His patience as a mechanic, repair person, and farmer was well known by his family and friends.
As a service to his community, Mr. Scott was a volunteer at the Cannonsburg Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years.  Mr. Scott graduated from Boyd County High School in 1957 where he was active in FFA. He went on to be a member of the Kentucky National Guard and trained at Fort Knox before eventually going to work for Armco in about 1964.  He remained at AK Steel until he retired in 2004 and continued consulting following retirement.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence E. Scott and Faye James Scott of Catlettsburg and his two brothers, Donald E. Scott of Ft. Myers, Florida and former Boyd County Judge Executive, William F. Scott.  He is also survived by several sister in laws including, Harriett Scott, Maxine Scott, Elizabeth Lemaster, Mary Combs, Brenda Lemaster, Debra Gauze, Nancy Gauze, Terri Reeves, and Connie Frazier.  He will be missed by many, but the examples and lessons of respect for family, Christian values, savings, land, and animals will never be forgotten by those who loved and knew him best.
Funeral services will be held 11:00am Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at Cannonsburg Trinity Community Church with Pastor Bruce Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
