Helen Margaret Withrow Cheek

Helen Margaret Withrow Cheek, 94, of Russell passed away on January 27, 2020. She was born January 16, 1926, at Coalton, KY, a daughter of the late Arch and Gertrude McClelland Withrow.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Harry Edward Cheek, in 1997. During WWII at the age of 18, she worked as a welder at Sun Shipyard in Chester, PA. When the war ended and Harry came home, she returned to Kentucky and they were married. Also preceding her were brothers Charles Milton Withrow, Henry Withrow, Paris Daniel Withrow and sisters Mary Withrow Nelson and Rosa Withrow Daniels.
   She was a member of Summit Missionary Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School worker, Assistant Treasurer and JOY Club member. She was a long-time member of the Boyd County Republican Women’s Club, Boyd County Little League Women’s Auxiliary, Boyd County Homemakers Club, and Rolling Meadows and Sundowner Women’s Golf Leagues, served as a Boyd County Election Precinct Officer for nearly 50 years, and enjoyed weekly Hand and Foot card games with dear friends.
   She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Jerry) Hall of Ashland and son Edward (Joy) Cheek of Versailles, KY; three grandsons: Jeffrey Alan Hall of Ashland, Stephen Edward Cheek of Lexington, KY, and Jason Wayne Hall of Bellevue, KY; five great-grandsons: Hunter, Joshua, Mason, Stephen and Thomas Cheek of Lexington; a special nephew, Lindsey Daniels and very special friends, Sherrie Meenach, Britni (AKA Jenny) Canfield, and Hannah Crum who were a blessing to her.
   Thank you to the Morning Pointe Lantern staff for their care and kindness during her time there and Community Hospice for their compassion and care during her last days.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel, in Ashland with Pastor Kevin Meenach officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and one hour before the service on Friday at the funeral home.
