Dr. John William Harrison passed away Wednesday, December 2nd, 2020. Dr. Harrison was born in Ashland, KY in 1931 to Marion “Red” Harrison and Edna Mae Scott Harrison. After graduating from Ashland High School in 1948, he attended Ashland Junior College until he joined the United States Army: Dr. Harrison served for two years, including one tour in Germany with the Occupation Army.
Dr. Harrison went on to attend the University of Kentucky (’57), and later the University of Louisville, College of Medicine (‘61). After completing an internship at Columbus General Hospital, in Columbus, Georgia, Dr. Harrison returned to Ashland with his family to establish his own medical practice in 1962. He also worked on the staff at Kings Daughter’s Medical Center until his retirement in 1993.
Dr. Harrison was a member of First United Methodist Church, Poage Lodge F&AM, the Bellefonte Country Club, the Continental Dance Club, the Road Runners Travelers’ Club, and served on the Board of Ashland-Boyd County Airport Authority for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Joan Marie Miller; his three children, John W. Harrison, Jr., (Sandy) of Louisville, KY; Jeffrey W. Harrison, (Ellen) of Tompkinsville, KY; and, Jennifer S. Royer (Cres) of Asheville, NC; his seven grandchildren, and his two great-grandchildren.
