John Anthony Highley, 72, of Russell passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. John was born July 23, 1947 in Ashland, a son of the late Jesse and Shirley Bush Highley. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brother James Howard “Jim” Highley.
John loved laughter and was known as a “Jokester” amongst his friends. He loved to hang out with his breakfast group buddies at the Flatwoods Dairy Queen, Flatwoods McDonalds and Jolly Pirate Donuts in Ashland. He retired with 30 years of service from AK Steel as an overhead crane operator and served his country with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 49 years Ruth Ann Hopkins Highley of Russell, son Ashley Highley of Russell, daughter Angela Highley Fraley of Flatwoods, his grandchildren he adored Kaleb Highley, Jackson “Roscoe” Fraley, Vivian Fraley, nephew Phillip (Stephanie) Highley, his K-9 Black Lab companion Prissy and a host of dear friends and neighbors who will deeply miss him.
Funeral services will be held 11:00am Saturday at the Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel by Rev. Don Young. Entombment with full military honors will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park.
Visitation will be Friday evening at the funeral home from 6-8 pm and Saturday from 10:00am till service time at 11:00.
