John A. Simpson, 95, of Ashland, died peacefully Friday morning, March 15, 2019, at the Community Hospice Care Center.
He was born September 17, 1923, in Ashland, a son of the late Alexander and Octavia Runyon Simpson.
John was a 1941 graduate of Ashland High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Marshall University and was a 1948 graduate of Duke University Law School.
A lover of music, he began his career as a disc jockey and had his own radio show known as the Cousin Johnny Show. He later opened his law office and remained in private practice until he became the first public defender in Boyd County. He was appointed District Court Judge in 1977 and remained in that position for 12 years at which time he returned to private practice until his retirement.
Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Helen Elkins Simpson of Ashland; son, Kevin Simpson of Ashland; daughter, Beth Lastinger and husband, Lane, of Ashville, NC; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
A private service will be held at a later date.
