John Talmadge Weidenheller passed into glory on May 29, 2020 at Community
Hospice Center following a short illness. John was born March 5,1930 to the late John
Thomas Weidenheller and Nora Christina Hatcher Weidenheller. He was preceded in death
by a brother, Thomas Richard Weidenheller and his wife of 54 years, Norma Jean Fullerton
Weidenheller.
He attended Ashland High School class of ’47. He was of the Baptist faith being
raised at Pollard Baptist Church. His Mother began the Avondale Baptist Chapel under
the authority of Rev. W. K. Woods. He would go twice a week as she brought Bible
stories, treats, and games to the eager children. Avondale has now been replaced by the
Ashland Tennis Center.
For 48 years, John and Norma lived on a small farm on Meade Springer Rd. There
they had a few cows, a dog Schoonover, cats,Tom and Jerry among others and Norma’s
horse Copper. They were members of Liberty Baptist Church until they left the farm and
moved into town where they became members of Unity Baptist Church.
John worked in the family business, Hatcher Produce and Feed Company on
Greenup Ave. He would travel many miles picking up eggs to sell at the store. Also
working many long hours there. Norma eventually joined him at the store. Where you saw
one the other wasn’t far behind. After selling the store, he took a brief early retirement.
They spent many winters in Florida. After discovering he still needed something to do, he
worked for Patton Construction Company, until finally retiring for good.
He used to hunt in his early years, he enjoyed reading in later years. He could have
written a history of Ashland because he knew all about the old buildings and their
histories. John was a friendly, easy-going fellow, very well liked by all. They had wonderful
neighbors on Meade Springer and that continued when they moved into town. They were
surrounded by wonderful neighbors who continued to look after him after Norma passed
10 years ago.
Those left to remember him include: Norma’s sister and her husband, Nancy
Fullerton Edmond (Gary) of Ashland, sister-in-law, Mary Jo Fullerton Baum of Sanford,
