Karen Jean Kanouse Holbrook

Karen Jean Kanouse Holbrook, 74, transitioned from her earthly home in Nicholasville, Ky., to her eternal one with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Jan. 11, 2021, after a prolonged illness.
She was born July 9, 1946 in St. Louis, Mo. as the first child of the late Fred and Velma Kanouse, and became big sister to Steve Kanouse, and the late John and Tom Kanouse. Raised in Ashland, Ky., Karen was a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School and went on to a 38-year career as an executive secretary at Ashland Oil.
“The prettiest girl in Ashland,” Karen instantly stole the heart of Thomas I. Holbrook, who has since enjoyed nearly 47 years of marriage with her. Together they raised three children—Robert Steven Bell of Louisville, Ky.; Leigh Ann (Rob) Daniel of Omaha, Nebr.; and Tonia (Aaron) Johnson of Louisville, Ky.—and now have six grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Upon her retirement Karen enjoyed reading everything she could get her hands on, car rides with the top down around Nicholasville with Tom and family trips full of adventure and laughter.
Her family rejoices that Karen is safe and whole in God’s presence and that we have a lifetime of sweet memories with such a loving person to cherish. We would like to thank Mindy Conrad of Lexington, Ky., for the faithful, loving care she gave Karen in the four years leading up to her death. Your kindness is worth more than we could express.
Visitors can call noon-1 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2021 at Steen Funeral Home’s 13th Street Chapel, at 3409 13th Street in Ashland. Following a 1 p.m. service, officiated by Reverend Donald Young, Karen will be interred at Rose Hill Burial Park.
