Karen Sue Poore
February 16, 1947 ~ August 22, 2021 (age 74) 74 Years Old
Karen Sue Poore, 74, of Catlettsburg, KY, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 22, 2021, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was born February 16, 1947, in Menifee County, Kentucky, a daughter of Ada Sorrell Botts of Catlettsburg, KY, and the late James O. Botts. In addition to her father, her daughter, Jennifer Linville Coburn, preceded her in death. Karen was a 1964 graduate of Rowan County High School. She studied Elementary Education at Morehead State University and graduated in 1967; she received a Master of Arts in Education in 1971 and later received her Rank 1. She retired following a long teaching career with the Boyd County School System; she worked for the State Department of Education for a few years and later retired as Facilitator of Adult Literacy at Ashland Community and Technical College. Karen was an active member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She enjoyed reading, UK Basketball and geocaching. Karen took great pride in her grandchildren and was overjoyed when they visited. In addition to her mother, Ada, those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 27 years, Bob Poore of Catlettsburg; grandson, Beau Coburn and son-in-law, Andy Coburn, of Billings, MT; stepson, Robert (Jennifer) Poore of Huntington, WV; stepdaughters, Tina Church of Coldwater MI, and Joy Shelton of Ashland; granddaughter, Holly Shelton of Ashland; sister, Sharon (Nathanael) Hall of Catlettsburg; niece, Tonia Hall (Josh) Wade of Ashland; and a great niece, Hannah Wade of Louisville, KY; A celebration of Karen’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Steen Funeral Home 13th St. Chapel with words of comfort provided by Rev. Stephen Smythers. Friends may gather after 10:00am at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
