Tribute

Lawrence Phillip Slone, a lifelong Ashland resident, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, May 28, 2019 with his loving family at his side. Mr. Slone just celebrated his 89th birthday, born May 16, 1930 in Ashland. He was one of 13 children born to the late Roy and Retta Pennington Slone.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers Raymond, Robert, Richard, John, Buddy sisters Alice Covey, Jo Bruns, Joyce Davis, Jean Rogers and an infant son Kip Slone.
Mr. Slone was a true Tomcat Fan. He supported the Tomcats in many capacities. He served as videographer, volunteer for any task, maintenance worker and escort. He loved to travel with the team.
Mr. Slone served in both the United States Army and the United States Air Force. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars with 20 years of combined service in the military. He retired from the GTE in 1991 with 22 years of service.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 57 years Clara Mae Fisher Slone of Ashland, his daughter Johnda Holbrook and husband Biff of Ashland, brothers Kenneth L. (Marty) Slone of Cape Coral, FL, Charles R. (Lois) Slone, sister Anita Estep of Ashland, step son Vernon Clark and wife Bernice of Ashland, granddaughters Jessica (Eric) Kersey, Chrissy Copley, great grandchildren Rylan Kersey, Brooklyn Kersey, Carson Copley, Jaxon Copley, Finn Copley and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel by family friend Chris Hammond. Burial with full military honors will conclude in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be Saturday evening from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
