LeRoy Smith 1924 – 2018 A true servant of his Lord Jesus Christ and a member of the World’s greatest generation, LeRoy Smith, 93, of Ashland passed away Monday, March 5, 2018 at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. LeRoy was born April 2, 1924 in Sciotoville, Ohio, a son of the late Charley and Catherine Hannah Smith. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years Ruth Lycan Smith, brothers Bill Smith, Charles Smith, Carl Smith, Ralph Smith and his sister Katherine Smith. LeRoy was a 1943 graduate of Ft. Gay High School in Ft. Gay, WV. After high school he immediately joined the Army and served with distinction during World War II. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater throughout the South Pacific and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Bronze Arrowhead. His Combat Battalion participated in the Philippine Liberation and was one of the first Company’s to participate in the Occupation of Japan. LeRoy retired from Air Products Corporation in Ashland and was a faithful member of the Unity Baptist Church in Ashland. Survivors include his son Roy Allan Smith and wife Rita of Huntington, WV, daughter Kathy Smith Whitt and husband Roy of Fernandina Beach, FL, his adoring grandchildren Wendy Hooten, Chris (Heather) Smith, Shane (Amber) Whitt, Tara (Chuck) Venditti and eleven great grandchildren. The family would like to extend a personal thank you to Dr. Kimberly Baldock, his extended family at Morning Pointe in Russell and to Dr. Downs and staff at Community Hospice for their excellent care and compassion. Funeral services will be held 12:30pm Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue by Pastor Mike Rice. Burial with military honors will be in the Ashland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00am till 12:30pm Friday at the funeral home.
