Lon M. Venters, Jr., 90, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019 in Crystal Care of
Coal Grove.
He was born January 31, 1929, in Shelbiana, Kentucky, a son of the late Lon M. Venters, Sr. and
Grace Syck Venters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers,
Walter S., Lester C. and Eugene H. Venters; and two sisters, Mildred P. Fowler and Evelyn P.
Pickron, infant twin sisters and an infant brother.
Lon was a member of First Baptist Church of Ashland and retired after 50 years as a Locomotive
Engineer with CSX.
He was a member of Poage Masonic Lodge 325, El Hasa Shrine and Elks Lodge BPOE 350. He
volunteered at the Paramount Arts Center and was a model train enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Jean Rolen Venters of Ashland; daughters, Elizabeth Grace
Venters of Salyersville, KY, and Lona Jean Venters Valentine and husband, Clif, of Union, KY;
sisters, Frances Porter and husband, Don, of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Estelle Horton and
husband, Bob, of Deland, FL; three grandchildren, Martin W. Warren and Andrew L. Warren,
both of Tampa, FL, and Clifton E. Valentine IV, of Union, KY; two step-grandchildren, Brooke C.
Valentine Pulliam and husband, Nathan, of Columbus, OH, and Christopher C. Valentine of
Louisville, KY; one step-great grandchild, C. Beck Pulliam of Columbus, OH, a special cousin,
Hargis Harris and wife, Athalene, of Pensacola, FL and their children James P. Harris and wife,
Beth, of Pensacola, FL and Josette Harris Hatley and husband, Rob, of Covington, LA; and
several nieces and nephews. He was a loving dad who often joked and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Saturday, April 20, 2019, at Steen Funeral Home
Central Avenue Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with James P. Harris officiating.
Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
