Loretta Irene Rice Kuyper, 80, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2019 in Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Irene was born in Ashland, KY, on October 15, 1939, to the late Marvin and Christine Rose Rice. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Reba Rice Grubbs.
Irene graduated from Boyd County High School and Morehead State University. She taught in the Boyd County Public School System until her retirement in 2000. During her career, she was the Boyd County High School cheerleader sponsor for many years and later the Boyd County Middle School academic team coach. Irene was a Kentucky Colonel, a life member of PTA, and was inducted into the Kentucky Academic Hall of Fame by the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition. Also, Boyd County Middle School presents the "Irene Kuyper Award" to a student each year in recognition of excellence and leadership.
Irene is survived by her husband of 51 years Joel Kuyper, children Laura Kuyper of South Point, OH, Mark (Alexandra) Kuyper of Lexington, KY, and grandchildren Annalee Kuyper and Emmerson Kuyper.
Irene was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ashland and active in the church circle, as well as the Boyd County Retired Teachers Association and 3-Arts Club. She also loved playing Bunco and canasta.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 21, 2019 at Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel with Rev. Jeff Bramel officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.
