Mary Aker Ward, 90, of Ashland, passed away at home on Wednesday, March 4, 2020.
She was born on July 26, 1929 in Wytheville, VA to the late Charles and Evelyn Aker.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Aker, Jr. and George Aker, and two sisters, Frances Riggs and Betty Wright, as well as sons-in-law Ron Corn and Pat Hurst.
Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Roy Ward; children Peggy Corn, Barbara (Mike) Tackett, Susan Coy, Mary Jane Hurst, and David (Elizabeth) Ward; ten grandchildren, Patrick (Megan) Corn, Jessica (Preston) White, Elizabeth (Mason) Laird, Allison (Aaron) Beach, Jared (Kendra) Coy, Kelly Hurst (Daniel Thacker), Amy (Steven) Faulkner, David Hurst, Jane Anne Ward, and James Ward; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Mary was a long-time member of Pollard Baptist Church, and a current member of Unity Baptist Church. She will be fondly remembered for being kind and generous to all, as well as for her famous apple pies and cornbread.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff at The Lantern at Morning Pointe for their compassion and care of Mary.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel, with visitation from 12:00 – 2:00 pm the day of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, or Community Hospice would be appreciated.
