Norma Gene Bloebaum

Norma Gene Copley Bloebaum died peacefully in Raleigh, NC on Nov. 24, 2021 shortly after celebrating her 93rd birthday on Nov. 23. Gene was born in Catlettsburg to Fred and Jennie Copley, and grew up there with her older sisters Freida (Collins) and Thelma (White). She graduated from Catlettsburg HS and attended ACC until she joined Armco during family illness. A lifelong learner, Gene finished her ACC degree and later earned a bachelors degree from Liberty University.
Gene married Lincoln Bloebaum in 1955 and they had one son, Scott. She and Lincoln lived on a small farm on Route 5 in Boyd County until Lincoln's death in 2003. She moved to Raleigh in 2008 to be near Scott's family.
Gene worked for 17 years at Armco until giving birth to her son. She later worked for 23 years at Ashland Oil until retiring in 1992 as an environmental analyst. She later served as president of the retirees' club. She often reminisced about her working years, particularly about many colleagues and friends.
A deeply religious woman, Gene was a member of Westwood Baptist Church and was church organist for 25 years. She was also an animal lover who provided a home to numerous stray dogs and cats. Even in her last years she fed the strays behind the facility where she lived.
In addition to Scott and his wife, Nancy, she is survived by her grandchildren, Elena and Adam, as well as several nieces, nephews, and their families.
Services will be help on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 1:00 PM at STEEN FUNERAL HOME-13th STREET CHAPEL. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until service time at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gene's memory can be made to
Westwood Baptist Church, Parkinson's Foundation, or Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
