Tribute

Randall Joe Stevens, 75, of Catlettsburg, KY, passed away in Cabell Huntington Hospital on Thursday, May 5, 2022.

Joe as he was known to his family and friends was born March 29, 1947, in Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late Virgil and Lucy Stevens. In addition to his parents, a brother, Tom Stevens and two sisters, Emma Lou Coburn and Marlene Blankenship preceded him in death.

Joe was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He and his wife recently retired after many years of owning Oasis Tanning in Ashland. During Vietnam, Joe was awarded a Bronze Star for his honorable service in the United States Navy and with his attachment to the Third Marine Amphibious Unit. He also served on the President’s ship in Washington, D.C. after returning from Vietnam. After his service to the Navy, he worked in communications at RCA Globecom between them and the White House and he was a voluntary Chaplin’s Assistant at King’s Daughters Medical Center. He truly loved his animals as family. He also loved guns and target practicing but, although he hunted as a teenager, after he had pets, he never hunted again. Joe was an ultimate patriot and a fierce protector of his family. He was a member of Gate City Gunslingers, had a great sense of humor and thoroughly enjoyed telling jokes and seeing those he loved filled with laughter.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 48 years, Darlene Docken Stevens of Catlettsburg; two sons, Nicholas Gallow Docken (Shelley Welch) Stevens of Ironville and David (Toni) Riffe of Westwood; brothers; Ellis Lee (Sue) Stevens of Ashland and David (Pat) Stevens of Mendon, MI; and two adoring granddaughters, Natalie Elizabeth Stevens and Olivia Docken Stevens and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2022, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark A. Kloha officiating. Entombment will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens where military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy and American Legion Kenova Post 93.
