Ray H. Salyers, 83, of Ashland, passed away at home on Saturday, December 19, 2020 with his family at his side.
Ray was born January 5, 1937 in Catlettsburg, a son of the late Lawrence and Mae Robinson Copley. In addition to his parents, Ray was also preceded in death by sisters, Jackie Colliver and Clara Mae Greene and a brother Jim Salyers.
After graduating from Thomas R. Brown High School in Catlettsburg, Ray went to work for Armco Steel Company and retired from AK Steel after 35 years of service. Ray also served his country with the KY Army National Guard and was a 50 year member of the Fred M. Gross lodge #953 F&AM in Ashland. He was an avid Ashland Tomcat and UK Wildcat Fan. Ray was a big supporter of area little league teams and all youth sports.
Ray, along with many of his friends, worked tirelessly to restore the Catlettsburg Depot to its former glory.
No passion was greater to Ray than that for his family. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 61 years Melinda Sammons Salyers of Ashland, daughters Mindy Pennington and husband Mike of Ashland, Jennifer Moore and husband Keith of Fallsburg, a son Steve Salyers and wife Teresa of Ashland, a sister Lila Wiley of Catlettsburg, grandchildren Wes (Holly) Hughes, Brandon (Bre) Pennington, Jordan (Kate) Salyers, Justin (Emily) Pennington, Jeff (Hannah) Moore, Emily (Michael) Adkins, great grandchildren Bryden, Carson, Kennedi, Logan, Addie, Archer, several nieces, nephews and dear friends. He cherished his time with his grandson’s dog Cass and his loyal K-9 companion of 12 years Max.
Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the Steen Funeral Home 13th St. Chapel by Pastor Chuck Allen. Entombment will follow in the Ashland Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:00 Noon till service time at 2:00
