Robert Buckley Tanner, of Charlottesville, VA, formerly of Ashland, died March 16, 2018, in Charlottesville. Born in Ashland on July 14, 1942, he was the son of the late Robert M. Tanner and Willa Buckley Tanner of Ashland.

Mr. Tanner was a graduate of Ashland High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics summa cum laude from Yale University and a law degree from Yale Law School, where he served on the Board of Editors of the Yale Law Journal. He also received a Master of Arts degree in History from the University of Virginia. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Mr. Tanner is survived by his wife, Carol Goff Tanner. For many years they made their home in Ashland. During that time he was active in business, community, and church affairs. He was the president of the Rich gasoline marketing companies, headquartered in Ironton, Ohio, and served as a Director of the Ohio Petroleum Marketers Association. He was a former member of the Ashland Board of Education, serving as Chairman in 1987, a member of the King’s Daughters Hospital Board of Managers, a longtime Director of the Third National Bank of Ashland, and a member and former president of the Bellefonte Country Club. He served as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Kentucky, Ohio, and American Bar Associations.

In addition of his wife, Carol, who resides in Charlottesville, survivors include: daughters Jane Buckley Tanner and her husband, Tom Davis, of Richmond, VA, and Ann Tanner Keifer and her husband, Kevin, of Mechanicsville, VA; a son, William Watson Tanner of Charlottesville; grandchildren Katherine Grace Tanner and James Fraser Martin Tanner of Charlottesville; Lydia Jane Keifer and Alexander Bruce Keifer of Mechanicsville.

Memorial services will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church, Ashland, under the direction of the Reverend Julie Olt on Saturday, March 24, at 11 am. Family will receive visitors at the church during the hour before the service.
