Robert “Bob” Thomas Garner, 76, of Ashland, strengthened by the grace of God and fortified by the Sacraments of the Church, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2019, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
He was born August 8, 1942, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late George Lincoln Garner and Dorothy Sue Dotson Garner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Ellinore Florence Haggard Garner on June 29, 2018. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Jean Ling.
Bob was a 1960 graduate of Huntington High School. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Ashland. He was also heavily involved in Holy Family Catholic School and was an integral part of their NASP Archery Program for students. Bob and his wife, Ellinore owned and operated Summit Cleaners and he retired after 35 years of service from Kentucky Power Company. He also served honorably in the United States Army and the Army Reserves. He was an avid outdoorsman being very active in the Northeast Kentucky Fish and Game Wildlife Association, Wild Turkey Federation, League of Kentucky Sportsman, and in 1991 was recognized by Governor Wallace Wilkinson as the Kentucky Sportsman of the Year.
He and his wife, Ellinore were members of the Ashland Lions Club and were very involved with 4-H and the UK Cooperative Extension.
Those left to cherish his memory include a son, The Rev. D. Andrew Canon Garner of Ashland; daughter, Joy Jobe and her husband, Shane of Argillite; two grandsons, Robert Logan Jobe and Brayden Cooper Jobe; a twin brother, William Christian Garner and his wife, Robin of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel. Rosary and Vigil Prayers will begin at 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2019, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father D. Andrew Canon Garner, KHS presiding, and other officiating clergy include Father J. Michael Clark, Father Joshua A. McCarty, and Father Julio E. Barrera. Burial will follow in Ashland Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the United States Army and American Legion Kenova Post 93.
