Rose Marie Murphy Smith of Boyd County, Kentucky, passed peacefully at her residence on November 7, 2022 at the age of 79. She was born October 8, 1943 in Harrison, Arkansas, to the late Elza and Hattie (Hawkins) Murphy.
Rose attended the School of the Ozarks in Arkansas and graduated from Harrison High School. She worked for United Missouri Bank in Kansas City, Missouri for over a decade and helped develop their first computer systems for sending wire transfers. She enjoyed working with numbers and served as an Accountant and Bookkeeper for D&D Shoe Company in Murray, Kentucky well past retirement age.
Her passion was quilting and during her lifetime created a large number of beautiful heirloom quilts which she gifted to her family and friends. Rose was an avid genealogist and loved compiling family history. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Poage Chapter. Rose was also an active member of the Wurtland First Church of the Nazarene.
Rose was preceded in death by a brother, James Elza Murphy, Pueblo, Colorado and a sister, Betty Ann Ernst, Columbus, Ohio. Rose is survived by her daughters; Dena Thornton (Jim) of Wurtland, Kentucky, Diana Gullett (Lin) of Mead, Kentucky, and Dawn Smith of Louisville, Kentucky, two sisters; Patsy Shepherd of Seneca, South Carolina and Lucy Hardin (David) of Aurora, KY. She will also be missed by her six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the Wurtland First Church of the Nazarene, 619 Fulton Avenue, Wurtland, KY. The Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Pastor Scott Hill.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Rose’s memory be made to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101.
