Stephen Allen Mathews

Stephen Allen Mathews, 78, of Ashland, died peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2020, in the Community Hospice Care Center.
He was born February 28, 1942, in Huntington, WV, a son of the late Gene and Sara Melrose Mathews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Bragg Mathews and an aunt, Wilma Melrose.
Steve was a graduate of Vinson High School in Huntington, WV. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy as a radar man aboard the USS Dupont. He retired following a long career with A.K. Steel. He was an avid fan of the Kentucky Wildcats Basketball team and was a regular at local cruise-ins and car shows.
Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Dean Mathews of Ashland; three granddaughters, Alexis Mathews, Ashley Mathews and Allison Mathews all of Ashland; brother, Bill Mathews of Columbus, OH; sister, Holly Snow of Huntington, WV; former daughter-in-law, Melissa Hill of Raceland, KY; and a host of extended family members and dear friends.
A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, at Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington, with Chaplain Jimm Smedley officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy and American Legion Kenova Post 93.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Steen Funeral Home.
