Tribute

Thomas Edwin Wellman, 78, of Ashland, KY returned to the arms of His Lord on October 22, 2020 while his family was by his side. Tom was born on December 30, 1941 in Ashland, KY to the late Paul and Venus Wellman. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Paula Nichols.
Tom was saved by the grace of God in 1952 and was a member of First Baptist Church of Orlando, FL, graduated from Ashland Senior High School in 1959, attended Cameron University in Oklahoma and graduated in 1973 from Georgia State College. Tom entered the US Army in 1960 and retired in 1982 with rank of Chief Warrant Officer. During his service, Tom traveled around the world from the Far East (Korea) to the Middle East (Iran) with many stops in between. Tom was a war Veteran of Vietnam. His wife and children accompanied him on assignments to Europe (Germany) and Iran. After retiring from the military in Colorado Tom worked for the Orange County, FL government Sheriff’s department as Plans and Operation officer. Prior to fully retiring, Tom owned a landscaping company in Orlando, FL.
Tom’s passions include being an avid baseball and fast pitch player and fan. He was a member of Ashland’s first Babe Ruth league established in 1956. He further played many years of fast pitch softball while in the military. Another passion included NASCAR, attending many races with his wife, children and friends. His favorite tracks were Bristol, TN and Dover, DE. Antique vehicles was another of Tom’s passions. Over the years he owned many cars and trucks such as a ’67 Nova, ’67 Chevy truck, ’72 Cadillac, ’67 MGB and ’64 Oldsmobile Jetstar 88.
He is survived by his best friend, lover and wife of 59 years, Carole. His children are his proudest treasure. Sons Robert (Robin) Wellman and Matthew (Christina) Wellman of Florida, his beautiful daughter Julie (Tyson) Conrad of Ashland, KY, grandchildren Summer Wellman of Colorado Springs, CO and Tristen and Robert Conrad of Ashland.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 11:00 Am at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens, Lexington, KY with military rites. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM.
