Lovell Bertram Goodwin

Lovell Bertram Goodwin, 101, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday evening, January 16, 2018, in Community Hospice Care Center.
He was born January 1, 1917, in Tannery, (Vanceburg) KY, a son of the late Conner and Bertha Horsley Goodwin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bertha Opal Goodwin; a son, Gary Lovell Goodwin; and siblings, Homer, George, Leo, Otha, Gladys and Goldie.
Lovell was a 68 year member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on numerous boards and drove the van for seniors at the church. He and his wife also served as Communion Stewards. He was a graduate of Vanceburg High School and Portsmouth Business School. He and Bertha married in 1940 and moved to Ashland. He worked for Clayton Lambert Defense Plant until he was drafted into the Army during WWII where he had the rank of Sargent. He spent 39 years at Sears as a furniture and rug salesman as well as being instrumental opening four stores with the company. He was a 70 year member of Poage Masonic Lodge and a 24 year member of South Ashland Lions Club. He loved gardening, flowers, golf, fishing and hunting. He was proud that he traveled to three oceans and eight countries. Until age 95 he was an avid mall walker and never met a stranger. He consistently attended church and had meals at Gattiland up to two weeks before his death.
His family will fondly remember his loving advice “pick out something you like and stick to it! And get an education!”
Survivors include his daughter, Joyce Ann Leaver and husband, Jack of Ashland; grandchildren, Douglas Scott Leaver of Ashland, David Eric Leaver (Karen) Texas, Valerie Ann Leaver Montgomery (Rick) of Liberty Township, OH, Ronnie Goodwin (Cindy) of Illinois, and Mary Michelle Goodwin of Lexington; great grandchildren, Cameron Lawson Leaver (Natalie), Paige Tennison Leaver, Breanna Marie Missler, Morgan Alexandra Montgomery, Caleb Samuel Montgomery, Jaden Patrick Montgomery, Tamrin J. and Emily Elizabeth Goodwin; great-great grandson, Eli Jackson Leaver; two sisters, Esther Crisp (Gene) of Wheelersburg, OH and Dorothy Kelly of Conneaut, OH; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
A celebration of Lovell’s life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel with Rev. John Street officiating. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens where military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and American Legion Kenova Post 93.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.
